چکیده
Evidence concerning (1) the relationship of extraction treatment and development of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), (2) the value of 2-stage treatment when compared to later 1-stage treatment, (3) the effect of orthodontic treatment of smiles and profiles, and (4) rapid maxillary expansion (RME)-induced spontaneous correction of Class II molar relations is reviewed. Is extraction treatment a risk factor for development of TMD? Is there any added value in 2-stage treatment? Does extraction treatment harm the esthetics of the smile and facial profile? Does RME in patients with Class II malocclusions routinely result in the spontaneous correction of Class II molar relations? Available data indicate that (1) extraction treatment is not associated with development of TMD, (2) there is no added value to 2-stage treatment except for the occurrence of less root resorption that exceeds 2 mm in subjects treated in 2 stages, (3) smiles after extraction treatment are as esthetically pleasing as smiles after non-extraction treatment and posttreatment profiles of extraction and non-extraction patients, for the most part, are similar, and (4) routine correction of Class II molar relations after RME does not occur. Conclusions: Extraction treatment is not a risk factor for TMD. There is little added value to 2-stage treatment except for the possibility of less root resorption exceeding 2 mm. Disadvantages are longer treatment time and the possible need for retention between stage 1 and 2. Extraction treatment does not compromise facial esthetics. RME in patients with Class II malocclusions does not routinely lead to conversion of Class II molar relationships to Class I relationships. Assessment of phantom dosimetry and image quality of i-CAT FLX cone-beam computed tomography.
INTRODUCTION The increasing use of cone-beam computed tomography in orthodontics has been coupled with heightened concern about the long-term risks of x-ray exposure in orthodontic populations. An industry response to this has been to offer low-exposure alternative scanning options in newer cone-beam computed tomography models. METHODS Effective doses resulting from various combinations of fi...

The cornerstone to evidence-based health care is the systematic review, a process that involves identifying, judging, and summarizing evidence on a particular clinical question. An excellent article appeared in the April issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association, devoted entirely to describing how systematic reviews are conducted and identifying some systematic reviews that have b...

Background: The rotavirus vaccine, introduced in 2006, has had a difficult history. Rotavirus accounts for 30% to 50% of hospitalizations for acute gastroenteritis and perhaps even more emergency department (ED) visits. Because rotavirus is not always tested for and detected, data are incomplete. Without knowing the actual burden of rotavirus, it is impossible to determine how the vaccination w...

Objective: To establish whether hip replacement or hemiarthroplasty is a superior treatment of displaced femoral neck fractures in a meta-analysis of prospective, randomized, controlled trials. Methods: A search of the orthopaedic literature was utilized to extract all randomized, controlled studies comparing total hip arthroplasty (THA) to hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients with displaced fe...

The aims of this study were to assess and compare the methodological quality of Cochrane and non-Cochrane systematic reviews (SRs) published in leading orthodontic journals and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) using AMSTAR and to compare the prevalence of meta-analysis in both review types. A literature search was undertaken to identify SRs that consisted of hand-searching fiv...
